TOURISM IN THE DISTRICT

Capertee Valley is claimed by the Lithgow Tourism Information Centre to be the widest canyon in the world. The Grand Canyon being the largest in the world. Huge sandstone escarpments embrace the eastern watershed of this fertile farming community, sourced at Mt Marsden in the Bogee area through the valley via a network of creeks into the Capertee River which flows past Glen Davis in the east to the Hawkesbury River.

The birdlife is world renowned; the Regent Honey Eater being of particular interest as an endangered species. World travellers come armed with binoculars prepared for a feast of rare sightings.

The ruins of the Glen Davis Shale Works is worth a tour; as is a visit to Newnes in the Wolgan Valley to another shale mine which is now habituated by the famous glow worms; known as the Glow Worm Tunnel.

The accommodation is limited within the valley to the grand Glen Davis Boutique Hotel; available only to pre booked guests (not a licensed hotel open to the general public) , local B & B's accommodation and camping at the Wollemi National Park near Glen Davis and the council camping grounds in Glen Davis in the heart of the Capertee Valley. In Rylstone and Kandos there are hotels, motels, B & B's and a caravan park.

Kandos Museum is well worth a visit; explore the historic village of Rylstone with its exquisite, historic buildings.

Dunns Swamp is another attraction in the district as well as the World Heritage area of the Wollemi National Park, trout fishing in the Turon River, Gold Panning in Sofala and the fabulous vineyards of Mudgee, a little further to the west. A little to the east of the Capertee Valley is the Emirates Wolgan Valley Resort for the six star luxury seekers.

This special region offers variety to suit all tastes.
