CAPERTEE VALLEY COMMUNITIES

The Capertee Valley, the widest canyon in the world is home to a diverse community from farmers and graziers, village residents of Glen Davis, full time residents on the smaller holdings. The residents hail from a kaleidoscope of origins; from descendants of the original pioneers to the Capertee Valley to foreigners who make Capertee Valley their home.

Turn right off Castlereagh Highway, Capertee travelling west from Lithgow and enter the canyon travelling down the side of the southern wall and into the bowl of the Capertee Valley. Capertee is enjoying growth due to the Mt Airly Mine operation nearby. This community is managed by the Capertee Progress Association.

In the heart of the valley at the eastern cliffs sits the ghost town of Glen Davis; a past shale mining town which closed in the 1950s and only a remnant of homes remain. The Glen Davis Community Association is sited at the council camping grounds within the village. A weekend kiosk is open to both locals and travellers. The grand Glen Davis Hotel is still there in fabulous condition. This is town is a huge draw card to both historians and tourists.

The incredible birdlife is internationally famous. Likewise the ecosystem is unique and prehistoric; the valley being flanked by the World Heritage Wollomi National Park. Capertee Valley sits as guardian to the Wollomi Pine Forest which dates back to the Jurassic period.

The little village of Glen Alice is 13 kms west from Glen Davis in the bowl of the Capertee Valley. It is the site of the Glen Alice Historic Church and Cemetery and worth a browse. The local bush Glen Alice Bushfire Brigade, Glen Alice Public School and the Community Hall, (home base for Glen Alice Community Association) are sited here on the banks of the Numietta Creek.

The Tourist Drive No 2 will take you on a journey of spectacular scenery which is equivalent to some of the best you will experience world wide.

Capertee Valley was voted the one of seven natural wonders of New South Wales by the ABC in 2008. Be prepared to fall in love with the Capertee Valley!!
